Plugin. MegaRender export plugin

Plugin is a special software module, that can be added to an existing program. Plugins are used to increase functionality of 3D-modeling software. Usually, plugins are made as additional libraries.

Plugins can be used when the main software is designed to work with them. That’s why plugins are completely dependent on the preexisting programs and usually cannot be used without them.

Plugins can be purchased (in case they are developed by commercial companies) or are distributed for free (if released by independent developers).

When a plugin has an installation wizard, it is not hard to add it to the program. But if the developer didn’t bother adding the wizard (which often happens with free products), it may be tricky to install it. But in reality, it’s not that hard to make your plugin work.

First of all you’ll have to make sure the plugin you downloaded from the Internet is meant for your version of the program. For example, plugins developed for 3ds Max 2012 would probably not work with 3ds Max 2013. But the developers usually update their plugins when new versions of software are released, so it won’t be hard to find the suitable one. Also make sure to check if your installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. Many plugins will work only with one specified version.

All the plugins are library files (DLL), but depending on their properties can have different extensions:

.DLO – additional objects;

.DLM – modifiers;

.DLR – visualizers;

.DLT – textures;

.DLU – utility tools;

.BMI – import/export tools for graphic formats (using the images);

.BMS – saving files in different formats;

.DLC – controllers for object animation;

.DLE – export of 3ds Max files into other formats;

.DLF – import of fonts;

.DLI – import different formats into 3ds Max;

.DLS – subsidiary objects;

.DLV – post processing effects

.FLT – post processing filters;

.MSE – scenarios.

If the plugin doesn’t have an installation wizard, it can be activated in the following way:

1. Unzip the installation file of the plugin.

2. Find the library file with one of the aforementioned extensions.

3. Copy the file into the following folder: C:\\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max (version)\plugins

4. Restart 3ds Max

After installation the plugin will take its place between standard 3ds Max tools.

“Megarender” developed our own plugin for 3ds Max – MegaRender export plugin. It is completely free and will help you send your scenes to our render farm easily. It is also very convenient for moving your scene from one PC to another (for example, from office to home).

Latest versions of MegaRender export plugin are written in C#. Its usability is highly improved:

- plugin’s window adjusts its width and height to let you see long file pathways;

- you can see all the textures and their pathways in the table (not only those missing);

- you can see export status bar.

Main features of MegaRender export plugin:

1. Checks the scene for possible mistakes, that can interfere with receiving the desirable result during rendering (lost textures, lightmaps, V-Ray settings, etc.), and helps you save money on test rendering.

2. Accepts Cyrillic pathways.

3. Works with XRefs.

4. Correctly identifies textures with the same names, stored in different folders.

Supported software:

- Autodesk 3ds Max (3ds Max Design): all versions starting from 2009

- Chaos Group V-Ray: all versions starting from 1.5 (including 1.5 SP2 Demo)

- Mental Ray: any version
